Panjab University
The Panjab University (previously named
University of the Punjab) was founded in 1882 at Lahore as the
fourth teaching and affiliating University on the Indian
subcontinent under British rule. After partition and initial
dislocation, the University shifted to Chandigarh in 1956. Its
red stone campus, designed by renowned French architects, came
up within a few years. The University campus was designed by
Pierre Jeannerret under the guidance of legendary Le Corbusier.
It is spread over 500 acres in sectors 14 and 25, Sector 14
having the main academic and administrative building, besides a
health centre, a sports complex, hostels and residential area.
Its faculty includes some of the most distinguished scientists
and academics in arts and humanities. The University
continues to attract celebrated scholars from abroad to visit
and interact with the faculty and students. Panjab University,
with its 55 teaching and research departments on the main campus
located at Chandigarh, has 122 affiliated colleges spread over
Punjab and Chandigarh, a Regional Centre at Muktsar, a
Regional Centre and an extension library at Ludhiana and VVBIS &
IS (Vishweshavaranand Vishva Bandhu Institute of Sanskrit and
Indological Studies) at Hoshiarpur.With its modern laboratories
and equipments, and one of the largest libraries in Asia, the
Panjab University offers tremendous opportunities to its
students, who interact with students from all over India and
abroad. They learn from a faculty of national and international
repute, and get exposure to a variety of academic, cultural and
youth leadership programs.
About Library
The Central Library of the
University is one of the largest libraries on the Indian
subcontinent. Its five story building is centrally
air-conditioned and has spacious reading halls and compact stack
areas. The Library has a collection of nearly six lakh volumes -
both rare and the latest, and 600 current periodicals with the
back numbers going as far back as the nineteenth century. There
also are 1500 rare manuscripts in classical and regional
languages. This Library known after Professor A. C. Joshi,
possesses all modern facilities and equipments to provide
services to its clientele. The specialized library of the Indian
Council of Social Science Research is too located in the Central
Library. Besides, the National Board of Higher Education in
Mathematics provides special support for the library of
mathematics department. In addition, the Library is linked to
and supported by fifty Department libraries geared largely to
meeting the requirements of students. The University Library has
been recognised as one of the six national centres for
data-information-distribution in the UGCs INFLIBNET programme.

About Chandigarh:
Chandigarh is referred to as the "City
Beautiful'' with many worth seeing places in and around it.
World famous French architect and urban theorist Le Corbusier
with his team of Pierre Jeannerret, Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry
gave the city its legendary architecture and its town planning. During the conference time, the weather in Chandigarh
will be cold with temperature around 8-15 degree centigrade and
warm clothes are needed. The warm beddings will be provided in
the guest houses.
